How Much Omega-3 per Day for Dry Eyes?

Just got diagnosed with dry eyes syndrome to explain the scratchy feeling in my eyes. Apparently the tear ducts are not functioning well due to inflammation. So the recommendation from the doctor is to take up to 4000 mg of Omega 3 fatty acid per day. But after I told him that we eat salmon regularly about twice a week, then he reduced the recommended intake to 1200 mg Omega 3 (or 1400 mg max) with supplement.

The other important thing is also to check our consumption of Omega 6. Make sure the Omega-6 vs Omega-3 ratio is still within the ideal range.

Some recommended products by the doctor. As a reminder, this might be very specific to my case which is moderate dry eyes symptoms. Recommended Treatment

So with a list of recommended products, the Dr’s advice was to take the supplements along with the home remedy by doing a warm compress to improve eyelid function and reduce inflammation in the tear ducts.

And more quick tips to improve the condition:

  • Drink plenty of water to improve tear production.
  • Eat a healthy diet for your eyes.
  • Use a humidifier in the bedroom at night while you sleep.
  • Use a goggle-style sunglasses can help to reduce airflow across your eyes and slow evaporation.
  • Avoid diuretics like caffeinated drinks (coffee, tea, etc).
  • If you work long hours in front of a computer, position your computer monitor slightly below eye level. This will ensure that your eyelids are in a slightly closed position, which may reduce tear evaporation.
  • Use preservative-free artificial tear as needed to lubricate your eyes.

Of course this is not an exhaustive list, and from what I was told, dry eyes cannot be cured but it can be managed and most cases are not dangerous. But again, if you feel something is not right, you should always not ignore it and get it checked as soon as possible.
