Food Poisoning in Kids, What to Check

Illustration of a father with a sick child

This is more of a note of what happens after a child older than 6 years old survives a food poisoning episode (vomiting about three times in one evening after a meal). This should not be treated as a medical advice by anyone especially with younger children.

In the morning after calling a nurse if we need to bring the child to the doctor, it turned out we did not need to but there’s a number of things to monitor.

The following was described based on a timeline when the child had just vommited and could not take any food.

What to do/check

  1. Make sure the child stays hydrated and urinate at least once every 8 hours.
  2. You may give ginger ale / water / plain soda after 4 hours.
  3. If the child cannot eat normally yet, give something light such as crackers, banana, rice (bland food), toast.
  4. If vomiting, stop everything for 1 hour, then give 2 tsp water / pedialyte every 10 minutes and start over from no. 1.
  5. If there’s a fever of 101 or higher lingering after 36 hours, the child will need to be seen by a doctor. In the mean time, Tylenol can be used if fever disturbs the child.

In the end, we were never 100% certain that it was food poisoning, but given the fact it happened a few hours after a meal, even the nurse agreed that it was more likely the case. Sure enough on day three, the child was well enough to eat normally although was still lacking in energy from eating less.
